How to Harvest and Store Celosia Seeds

Do Celosia Plants Come Back Every Year?

No, they usually don’t come back every year like perennials. However, Celosia has a self-seeding habit, so you should see new plants next spring. As such, it is a very easy plant to grow – once the seeds hit the ground and are left alone, they will likely come back the following year.

Tips for Planting Celosia Seeds

The problem with self-seeding is that we often go into our gardens in the spring, shovel the soil, or plant some plants. The seeds that fall from the Celosia flowers in the fall are then buried deep.

Celosia seeds do not like to be buried too deeply. They like to live on a surface with a light sprinkling of soil. So, if they are planted too deep to handle some churn, you won’t be able to get your plants back. Fortunately, there is an easy solution – simply harvest free celosia seeds from your flowers in the fall.

We wait until the threat of frost disappears, then we plant the celosia seeds directly in the ground, cover them slightly, cover them very lightly with dirt, and add water to them. Make sure they are in a place with full sun, and then we will have beautiful, beautiful flowers all summer long.

How to Collect Celosia Seeds in Fall

Fall is the time to harvest your seeds. Here at the Flower Farm, we harvest sunflower seeds, echinacea seeds, and tons of other seeds every fall. There are a few different ways you can harvest Celosia seeds, so let’s dive into them.

The Cardboard Box Method

One of the easiest ways is to get a cardboard box and place it next to your celosia plant to dry. Now, if you take a look at your flowers, you’ll see a lot of browning going on, but that’s actually good! What you’re really looking for are the little black seeds in there.

Get a cardboard box and place it next to your celosia flowers.
Drape the flowers over the box and shake them. You can actually hear the seeds coming out of the plant!

Cutting and drying method

Now, if you want an abundance of Celosia seeds like I do, there’s another method you can try. You can cut celosia, which is also a great dried flower for arrangements.

  • Cut the entire bouquet.
  • Try to remove many of the leaf stems because the leaves sometimes contain moisture.
  • Tie the stems with a little string and hang them upside down in a cool, dry place.
  • Now that’s it. So you can either hang it upside down and put a box under it so that when the dried seeds start to fall, they fall into the box. Or you can put it in a paper bag. This is the way I like to do it. Label the date on your box or bag and leave it in a cool, dry place for about two weeks.
  • When the flowers are dry, shake them well in your box or bag. The seeds must fly!

How to Save Celosia Seeds

I like to store these seeds in small jars and pots so you can store them over the winter and replant them in your garden or give them as gifts so your loved ones can plant them in their gardens next summer.

Place the seeds in a sieve and start sprinkling them. This will leave the leaves and larger pieces behind, leaving you with only the seeds.
Do this several times.
Repeat using a finer sieve.
Store in a container (from a bowl or mason jar to a paper bag or cardboard box) in a dark, cool place.

Although I like to use a progressively smaller sieve, the end result doesn’t have to be really fine, especially if you’re just storing seeds for yourself. Although some of these other plant materials can be grown with seeds. However, it’s important to make sure there aren’t any errors, firstly because you don’t want to kill the errors – please – but also because you don’t want any errors there. .

I have to say, for the past couple of years, we have been keeping our seeds in boxes. We usually label the box with the date and type of seed and then leave the seeds until spring, when we return and plant them.
