How to Cut Annabelle Hydrangeas for Arrangements

When Are Hydrangeas Best Cut?

Today I want to show you the best way to prune your Annabelle hydrangea for the longest vase life. July is the perfect time to harvest the beautiful lime green Annabelle hydrangeas in my New Jersey garden.

Annabelle hydrangeas are one of my favorite hydrangeas to grow in a flower farm because once they are in the ground and planted, they keep coming back year after year. The flowers are incredible – they come in new growth every year.

All the flowers you see in the photo above came this spring. This means you don’t have to worry about harvesting it at the wrong time as new growth comes through every year.

How to prolong the life of your Annabelle hydrangea

Wait until they are out of the fresh white stage – When Annabelle hydrangea plants first bloom, they are a beautiful white color. However, fresh white flowers do not have a good bouquet life.

I wait until mid to late summer when they are almost dry, and look like paper on the stem – you can tell they are drier than fresh flowers.

Side by side, you can see how the white flowers are in full bloom, beautiful and fresh. The flowers look beautiful and moist. If you look closely at some of these petals, you can see that they are a bit dry. They wrinkle a little. This is great because you will be putting them in some water. When the water in the vase evaporates, you are left with a beautiful, dried flower that will look beautiful in the vase for a few months.

Get more life out of your hydrangea arrangement.

Then, when the dried flower runs out of color, just spritz it with spray paint and some floral paint to keep it looking great all year long.

It is a great cut flower for fresh cut flower arrangements as it will go from a fresh, semi-dried arrangement to a fully dried flower arrangement.

Step 1:

Cut BloomRemember, you can cut these stems as long as you want so as not to disturb next year’s flowers. So cut the flowers to the desired length with a simple snip.

Step 2:

Remove LeavesRemove all the leaves from the bottom because you don’t want the leaves in the vase water to cause bacteria and undermine the stems. So get rid of all the papers. You also don’t want your flower to worry about getting all those leaves wet. Let him focus on raising the water and moistening the top of the flower.

Step 3: Make Arrangement

  1. Slowly find some real estate in your fresh water vase and arrange flowers where there is little space. Feel free to twirl around the flower head, so her best face awaits you. Sometimes the back of the flower can be a bit flat.
  2. They look very beautiful when the best side of the flower is facing out.
  3. Continue adding flowers by moving the vase.
  4. You can fill this gap by adding some fresh vegetables from the garden. He managed to make it really simple and easy.
  5. Keep hydrangea plants away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and they should dry beautifully.
